Promoting literacy of food production processes

The aim of our Uniting Rural Producers and Urban Consumers project is to educate, engage, and inform urban consumers in southern Alberta about agriculture and watershed stewardship through a suite of communications materials.

Compiled below are all the deliverables and outcomes of the project, including engaging videos, in-depth written interviews with food producers, and live events.

OWC: Eats!

For a number of reasons, including one of the worst droughts we have experienced, 2021 was a tough year for those involved in many areas of food production. It is important to hear these stories firsthand and learn more about the innovative work that is being done in our region.

From process improvements and practice changes to the addition of new physical infrastructure and the restoration of native plant species, there is much to learn from this series of videos in which we sit down with an expert involved in food production in our watershed.

10 Questions With… Interviews

These in-depth interviews will allow everyone in the Oldman watershed to share in the knowledge offered by local members of our food production community. Watch this space!

Open Farm Days: August 13, 2022

We took over the Community Learning Centre at Farming Smarter’s Open Farm Days 2022. There were activities for kids and families, cold refreshments to beat the heat, and thought-provoking conversations and food samples from local farmers.

In total there were 347 attendees, and our space was particularly well-received according to the survey feedback from Farming Smarter. We received 89 survey responses in our second agriculture literacy survey and gained 19 new memberships.

See below for photos from the event.

Thank you to CAP for their funding and continued support of the project, as well as a big thank you to all of the producers and participants who have helped make the project come to life.
